DOWN THE RIVER IN A LEAKY TUG

Day One was spent getting the tug and barge ready for the trip.  We added another HMG to the rear of the tug and after a hard bargain we got two RPG with a total of 6 rounds.  On the barge we built up the front of barge with a lumber barricade and put two MMG there.  In the open bottom of the barge we put our 60mm Mortar and the 20 rounds we had for it.  We really missed not being able to get some more missile launchers.

We got the rest of the provisions on board and sorted out the watch schedule.  After going over the map we settled on a few likely spots we could stop for the night along the shore of the river.  The Captain was not going to risk the barge or the tug during the night.  We set off around noon on the third day under threatening skies and hoped the bad weather wasn't an omen to what would happen duing the journey.  As we left we saw a lone man standing on a hill with binoculars watching our departure.

Rain didn't start until 1400 hr and the torrential downpour slowed us down so much that the engines were only used to keep us moving straight.  The forward watch on the barge was doubled and the rest of us pulled in to catch some rest until 2000 hr when we would stop for the night.

The Captain was worried about the rising water levels as we had to crawl under a bridge about 40 km down the river at Szczucin.  He remembered a small friendly town called Nowy Korczyn where they could put in for day and we made plan to stop early for the night and make the last dash in the morning.   We reached the deserted town of Uscie Solne and after a quick check for wood and anything else to salvage we set up watch.

Around 4 am a brief alert was sounded when gunshots could be heard about a kilometer down the river and everyone decided to get back to the boat and push off and hold in the middle of the river. The dawn broke around 7 am and we made good time heading to Nowy Korczyn.

The Captain started to get nervous when we rounded the bend and the town came into sight.  What he claimed was a thriving community showed no sign of life yet all the buildings remained intact.  After a quick discussion Tanner and Bradley went ashore in a row boat with all the guns manned and covering them.  Both entered a few houses and disappeared out of sight for about ten minutes... then both came running like they saw the devil chasing them.  Breathlessly they said they came upon a mass grave with the townspeople in it and a warning sign saying the town was infected by the plaque.  They did manage to grab a small box with a thermal imaging gear.  The Captain decided to quarantine the two for twenty four hours so they were set up in the bow of the barge for the long haul.

The bridge crossing at Szczucin was a nightmare as the river was still running high and Diaz swore he heard scrapping noises as the boat creeped under the damaged bridge.  It took us over an hour to make it through and we were on a high state of alert in case intruders attacked.

We decided to put in near the town of Gawluszowice, another town that the Captain claimed was friendly but a brief recon of the area turned up a shallow grave full of skeletons and four or five dead marauders wearing ragged uniforms of the Soviet 9'th Tank Division.  A trail of bodies lead up to a bluff and after a careful search a well hidden cave was found and a cache of 5 barrels of gasoline discovered.  No wonder the townsfolk fought so hard.

The next day went more smoothly until the early evening when the tug encountered a shot up rowboat stuck on a snag.  A wounded man in the bottom of the boat warned us that up ahead was the town of TARNOBRZEG was overrun with vicious marauders and they had the river covered with machine guns and a mortar.  He lets the team know that the town is ripe for a revolution and just needs someone to knock off the leader.  After a consultation and a quick check of the map the team realizes that a distraction like an uprising would give them enough time to get pass the river ambush.

The party splits into three teams with Bradley taking Tanners G3 for sniping and setting up overwatch with Bishop and his trusty M60 in a local deserted apartment.  Diaz, Leblanc and the Captain will work the village gaining support for the uprising.  Tanner with his command of the local language will pretend to be the newly elected people representative and get close enough to try to take out or draw out the leader.  Either way the Vistula Queen will start moving at 2200HRS and attack the bridge guards.

The plan started to fall apart when a traitor let the local guardsmen know that Tanner was a plant and Tanner was captured and brought before the leader.  Tanner was about to be executed when Bradley used the G3 as a sniper rifle and took out the leader.  Chao ensured when Bishop threw a smoke grenade into the town square and started taking out the militia.  The Captain and Leblanc rushed the Mortar emplacement at the river and started lobbing bombs at the MG nest by the river.  Adam on the Vistula Queen pulled the tug around the bend and with the firepower on the boat took out the last MG with minor damage being done to the boat.

After the battle an envoy was sent to the next town Sandomiecz at the suggestion of the new town leader because of the dockyard located there and the vistula queen made the journey after restocking ammo and wood for its boiler.
